- MALAWIANS MIGRATING ACROSS SOUTHERN AFRICA, 1936 to 1964 -
MUSIC
Musical interchange between Malawi, Zimbabwe and South Africa was catalysed considerably by migrants crossing borders and taking different forms of music with them. In the 1970s, Sem Banda would send records of South Africa's Soul Brothers to his family in Malawi, but borders were also crossed by musicians themselves.
Kwela music from the streets of Johannesburg reached Malawi through the Kachambe who spent many years in Salisbury during the 1950s.
Music also travelled south, mainly through the songs of migrants travelling to work on the mines of South Africa. Shosholoza - a song sung by migrants as they travelled on the trains to South Africa is sung even today in football tournaments.
